Discover Our Top 10 Amazing Qualities
Exemplary Academics
Sangster Elementary School has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School. We also received the Virginia Department of Education’s Highest Achievement Exemplar Award in 2023 and 2024 for demonstrating academic success across student groups. We believe every student can succeed!
Purple Star School
Sangster Elementary School is proud to be a Purple Star School, recognized for our strong support for our military-connected students and families. We have more than 200 military-connected students! We host an annual school-wide Veterans Day Ceremony where all of our classes get to meet and hear from a veteran or active member of our military.
Strong Family-School Connections
Our strong PTA supports our School Carnival, spelling bee, chess club, fencing, robotics, yoga club, and many other activities! We also have many school-sponsored events, including Family Math Nights and Cultural Night, primary grade musicals, and field day for all K-6 students.
Dedicated STEAM Time
Sangster Elementary School has an established STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics) program for students to develop their innovation, creativity, design, and problem-solving skills. All of our grades 4-6 students engage in weekly hour-long STEAM Lab activities and design challenges while using a variety of resources including Ozobots, coding robots, and Keva Planks.
A Great Place to Learn and Work!
As of 2020, over 95% of our teachers and staff return each year to keep working with our wonderful students and families. Apart from new positions being filled, our Special Education staff has remained the same for more than five years!
Our Families Feel Welcome and Appreciated
On the 2023-24 Family Engagement Survey, 96% or more of Sangster Elementary School families said our school is safe and enjoyable for their child, welcomes different backgrounds and cultures, and values the diversity of our community!
Foreign Language in Elementary Schools (FLES)
Our Spanish Foreign Language in Elementary Schools (FLES) program provides grades 3-6 students the opportunity to develop their Spanish language proficiency.
Developing Young Leaders
Our students have opportunities to develop their leadership skills, including through Get2Green (a student-led initiative to beatify and enhance our garden and outdoor learning space) and our 5th Grade Ambassador Program (a student volunteer program that welcomes new students and recognizes students when they leave during the school year, especially for military–related moves).
Eco Club
Get2Green is a student-led initiative to beatify and enhance our garden and outdoor learning space. Sangster Elementary School students, staff, and family volunteers participate in a fall and spring clean-up of the garden area. Students meet monthly to share ideas, identify needs, and make action plans related to our outdoor learning space and sensory garden.
Honored Staff
Our dedicated Sangster Elementary School staff have been recognized by FCPS for their excellence as teachers and school-based leaders. We’re grateful for our wonderful team!
