Registration for the science fair is open at this LINK. Registration will close on February 24. For group projects, only one registration is required.

IMPORTANT DETAILS
- Participation in the science fair is optional.
- Projects are to be worked on at home, under parental supervision.
- The science fair is open to all students in all grades (K-6).
- Participants may opt to work independently, or with siblings or other partners.
- Each participating student may only submit one project.
- Parents will drop off projects inside at the gym doors on the evening of Monday, March 3 between 5-6:30pm and pick up projects on the evening of Wednesday, March 5 between 5-6:30pm.
- Students will tour the displays set up in the gym on March 4 or 5 with their classes during school hours.
- Parents and other supporters will be able to tour the displays in person on the night of March 4 from 5:30-7:00pm.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
- March 3 - Parents will drop off displays at Sangster between 5:00-6:30pm
- March 4-5 - Projects will be displayed in the Sangster gym, students will have the chance to tour the displays with their classes during school hours
- March 4 - Parents and other supporters will be able to tour the displays from 5:30-7:00pm in the Sangster gym
- March 5 - Parents will pick up projects from Sangster between 5:00-6:30pm
DISPLAYS & TOPICS
It is recommended projects be displayed on tri-fold boards with pictures and text. Please DO NOT bring in models, laptops, tablets, or other items for touching or manipulation.
Display topics should be STEM-based and should follow the these categories:
- Physical science experiments
- Inventions or solutions to scientific problems
- Displays or descriptions of famous scientists, inventors, or science equipment
Display topics should NOT involve:
- Animals (Observing animals in their natural state is allowed. Performing experiments on animals, including insects and other invertebrates is prohibited.)
- Mold or fungi, hazardous or controlled substances.
- Experiments that involve human test subjects, including surveys, subjective perceptions, social or psychology experiments, is prohibited.
- No topics involving eating, drinking, exercise.
- The use of dangerous devices, such as lasers, knives, and matches, is prohibited.
- Sangster PTA reserves the right not to exhibit displays deemed dangerous or inappropriate

Below are some topic ideas. For even more ideas, look for science-based books at your Sanster or local Fairfax County libraries!
- Physics: matter, electricity, magnetism, sound, light energy
- Earth: weather, geology, fossils
- Space: the sun, moon, stars, planets, satellites, space station
- Chemistry: crystal formation, bubbles, elephant toothpaste, oobleck
- Math: statistics and probability
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Who can participate in the science fair?
A: The science fair is open to all students (K-6) at Sangster Elementary School.
Q: Can my child work with a friend on their project?
A: Yes, students may choose to work independently or with a sibling or other partner(s). Please limit groups to no more than three students.
Q: Can my child use a pre-purchased science experiment kit?
A: Yes. Make sure the student clearly displays to expectation and results, and understands the concepts of the kit.
Q: Is the science fair a competition?
A: No, the Sangster Science Fair is not a competition. Participation is for the learning experience only.
Q: When can parents view projects?
A: Parents will have the chance to view project March 4 from 5:30-7pm in the Sangster gym.
