Welcome to Sixth Grade!

Language Arts— We start off the year with establishing norms and expectations for our Language Arts Workshop in order to build a community of readers and writers. Students will also work on building up their stamina for reading and writing over an extended period of time. These skills are the foundation for making effective use of both student and teacher time over the course of the school year.  Additionally, students will dive into their first reading unit — Book Clubs.

Math

6th Grade Math - We are working on comparing and ordering rational numbers

Advanced Math – We are working on rational numbers, including reviewing integer operations.  At the end of the month, we will begin proportional reasoning.

Science— We are working on our Astronomy unit!  This unit focuses on the inner and outer planets, the sun, and the moon. Our science classes will also be starting a PBL (project based learning) on exploring starting a colony on a planet!

Social Studies—We begin the year by talking about our rights and responsibilities, both as a student at Sangster and a citizen of the United States.  We will also analyze primary and secondary sources, which will continue to be an activity throughout our year.  Next, we will start our Geography unit where we will cover the major geographic regions and water features in North America.
