Grade 1 January Update

Monthly News- 1st Grade
January 06, 2020

Welcome to first grade! Check back in each month to see what we are doing!

First graders are beginning to look at different types of poetry this month. We will be discussing the ways that we can better understand the poems we read and where poets get their ideas from. Students will also become poets themselves as we practice writing our own poems based on some of the attributes we have seen.

In math we are continuing to learn place value and skip counting by 2, 5, and 10 up to 110. We will be learning how to group items by 10 into the hundreds. We will also be using estimation techniques to be able to make reasonable guesses with a group of objects.

During science and social studies we will be exploring the differences that we see in trees during the winter. We will be learning all about Jamestown and about Martin Luther King.

First graders go outside for recess any time we are able, so please remember to always send your child to school in appropriate winter weather clothing.
